Designing with Decorative Concrete Landscaping

When most homeowners in Augusta, GA think of concrete, they think driveways and sidewalks. But decorative concrete landscaping is one of many areas where concrete could be the perfect fit for home improvement needs. Decorative concrete offers homeowners attractive and cost effective solutions for landscaping projects, and has the added benefit of being virtually maintenance free.

Landscape Concrete Curbing can provide finished concrete curbing projects starting at just $400, so it’s a great way to add some beautiful accents to your landscaping at an affordable cost.

One of the most popular uses of concrete when it comes to landscaping is as a border material. It looks stunning around your flower or vegetable gardens, lining walkways, or as a way to set off trees and shrubs from the rest of your yard. Furthermore, the manufacture of stone imitation concrete materials means you’ll have a plethora of choices when it comes to style, texture, and color. Whether you’re looking for a smooth, polished look, or desire something closer to rough-hewn stone, there’s a concrete border that will fit the bill.

The main reasons property owners install concrete landscape curbing is because they get tired of replacing rusted or broken landscape edging or they do not like the appearance that metal gives their landscape. There’s also the problem of bricks being moved or slid around by animals, people or weather elements.

Concrete landscape curbing is the perfect solution for homeowners looking to increase their home’s curb appeal and update their landscaping design. Unlike trying to bend metal, concrete can follow any curves and bends that your landscape may have, and you can add custom colors and patterns to match anything from your brick, stone, or a specific landscape color that you may have in your garden.

By installing a continuous border, you will stop unwanted grass and weeds from invading your flower beds, and with the proper care, concrete borders will last the lifetime of your home.

New concrete does not need to be sprayed or misted with water. If it begins to rain within the first 8 hours after installation, cover the curb with plastic, making sure to remove it the next day. Also, during the first 72 hours, avoid direct sprinkler impact on the curbing. After 24 hours a mist will not create any damage, but a sprinkler within a couple of feet could cause some pitting in your new edging.

Generally, concrete takes approximately 28 days to totally cure. During the two weeks following installation, take extra care not to damage the curbing. Items such as rakes, shovels, and other gardening tools should be used with caution.

Keep children, adults, and pets away from your curbing for at least the first 72 hours. It may feel hard to the touch, but it is still susceptible to damage during the first 24 hours. Sod laying, sprinkler work, and other landscape work should be delayed for at least 72 hours after installation, and then should be done with care around the concrete curbing.

Efflorescence is common and can appear on concrete curbing for a variety of reasons. This powdery white substance occurs because of water and salt. As water from rain or a sprinkler system evaporates, a salty substance remains on the concrete. The mineral content of the water can affect the intensity, and if you water your yard frequently, efflorescence may appear more readily. If you need to remove efflorescence, simply mix a 50/50 solution of vinegar and water and brush lightly. You may have to do this more than once, but eventually, the efflorescence should go away.

Some fertilizers and chemicals will stain the curbing as they would any other concrete. Iron especially will discolor your concrete, whether it is in granules or in spray form. If the concrete has been sprayed with fertilizer, hose it down as soon as possible to avoid stains and damage.
